Fondant Cakes

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by :)

Our 12 year old daughter Jeven spent the night at her friends house the other night. Her friends Mom and the girls helped make a cake using fondant instead of frosting.

The cake turned out so cute, and Jeven had so much fun! So when she came home she couldn't wait to try to make a cake like that herself. So I went to Michael's Crafts and bought the fondant. The kind I bought was white and it came in blocks. So Jeven added food coloring to make it the colors she wanted.

The fondant needs to be rolled out. Jeven definitely got a workout with the rolling pin as she was trying to flatten it out. The fondant actually tastes sort of plain. I thought it would be sweeter than it was. But once you put it on the cake, it tastes good together.

We didn't make homemade frosting. I just bought the buttercream that comes in a little tub. I've never used fondant before, so Jeven taught me a few things that she had learned. One of which is that you need to add a layer of frosting to the top and sides of the cake, or the fondant won't stick. Good to know! Once Jeven covered the cake, she used a pizza cutter to cut the excess off the bottom of the sides. It worked out good. Then she just used tiny cookie cutters to get the circle and heart shapes. She used a dab of the frosting to the back of the little shapes, and they stuck to the fondant just fine.

I am very proud of her. She had never used this stuff before and she made three cakes her first time. I think they turned out real good. WAY TO GO JEVEN!!

She even put a white and black zebra candle in the last one to add some cuteness :)

So tell me, have you ever used fondant before? If so, did you like it?

Have a great day!

  2. Cute! I like the look of fondant, but I don't like the taste of it. You can also make marshmallow fondant, so you don't have to buy it at a craft store. It may be sweeter also.
